Andamooka Matrix Opal is from Southern Australia and is known as the “Queens Opal”. The Andamooka region is one of Australia’s most prominent opal fields; the name is derived from an Aboriginal term that means “large waterhole”. It is characteristic of opal fragments trapped in a sand matrix, appearing as glitter, especially after being cooked carefully in sugar known as carbonization, darkening the surrounding matrix and allowing the opal to shine through. This specimen has Grade A flash with lots of red, a highly coveted color in determining grading in opal, but not limited to blue, purple, green, yellow etc. This piece is truly Rainbow Matrix Opal and has been sugar treated and polished and cut with a uncommon obtuse angle with beveled edges. This piece is truly unique and will make a beautiful pendant either set or wire wrapped.
